Michigan's Oldest Horseshoe Club Established in 1960
The Lake Orion Horseshoe Club is sanctioned by the Michigan Horseshoe Pitchers Association (MHPA), and is one of 7 sister clubs within the state of Michigan. Collectively, these clubs hold state wide weekend tournaments throughout the year. For the real horseshoe enthusiast, in addition to pitching with us on Tuesday night, you may enjoy attending these various weekend tournaments, pitch in the Annual State Championships, the State Doubles Tournament is currently held at these courts, or even pitch at the World Horseshoe Tournament hosted by the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association (NHPA). Your level of participation is totally up to you!
The Club started in the Bunny Run Subdivision in the late 1950’s. The founders obtained approval from the Village in the early 1960’s to develop the land east of Children’s Park which was then a flood plain. The members began the task of preparing the grounds and constructing the 15 regulation horseshoe courts according to standards as set forth by the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association (NHPA). For over 60 years our Club has acted as a sole caretaker for the courts making them available to the entire community. The Club promotes sportsmanship amongst its members while promoting the art of horseshoe pitching. Many of Lake Orion players have won local, state, national and world Championships. The Club is a unique asset and considered a jewel to the Orion Community. Not only does the club host weekend tournaments sanctioned by the Michigan Horseshoe Pitchers Association (MHPA) but every September many of the Michigan clubs get together and compete in the Woody Cup Challenge. The winning club will host the following year, with all proceeds going to benefit St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. To date we have raised over $11,246.00. Winning club members' names will be featured on a plaque on the extra-large Woody Cup.
